The Sufi Concept of the Ego:
A Discussion of Sufi Psychology and its Applications

Robert Frager

I propose a two-fold discussion of the Sufi conceptions of the nafs, or ego/self. First I will describe the classic Sufi, seven-stage model of the nafs, and discuss its implications for transpersonal psychology. I will present the seven stage model as an integration of concepts of Western psychology (such as narcissism, self-esteem, ego, id, and superego) with transpersonal concepts (including channeling, wisdom of the heart, and self-transcendence).

In the second half of the discussion I will present a modern psychological model I have developed, based on the nafs. I have used this four-stage model in business consulting. It integrates both individual and institutional levels of functioning, and also utilizes Ken Wilber’s four quadrant model of inner-outer/ and individual/collective.
